If Jesus had no sin, then why was He baptized? There is an answer to this, but I have to rewind a bit and let you know what lead to this.
John the Baptist was a man who preached the Word of God before Jesus came on the scene. John told people about God and to be baptized as a sign that all your sins are taken away and you are going to start a new life. Did Jesus need to be baptized? No, because he had no sin. However in Matthew 3:15, Jesus told John that it needed to be done in order to accomplish God’s ultimate mission. This is what Jesus said, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.“
When you are a leader in life you have to lead through example. You can’t just tell someone else to do something important and you haven’t done it yourself! Jesus was a leader by nature, so it’s just proper to practice what you preach!
Then after Jesus was baptized in water by John the Bible says in Matthew 3:16-17, “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
So after Jesus leads by example, God recognizes this and makes it known to the people that were present at that moment. So you have to lead through example. It was the right thing to do even though it didn’t need to be done.
By getting baptized Jesus shows his support to John’s ministry as well. John was preaching to the people over a long period of time that you need to be baptized even before Jesus did. What a great way to show the people that John was indeed right!
